Motz's Thoughts: E3 2017 Recap (Microsoft, Sony, & Nintendo) https://staging.montemagno.com/e3-2017-recap-and-reviews-microsoft-sony-nintendo/ 598df8f2c121b60019bf2fc5 Wed, 14 Jun 2017 22:50:37 GMT

I have always been a video game nerd, so much so that I went to school to go and create games for a living. I worked at a studio, helped develop a game called Shred Nebula for Xbox 360, and then left the industry forever. While I may not be creating games anymore, my passion is not gone and there is a time each year that I geek out.

It is that time of the year when all the big game publishers and console creators go BIG and announce everything, and that event is E3 and that time of year was this week. E3 is a multi-day event based out of Los Angeles that has been going for a long time and has gone through multiple iterations. I went to E3 many moons ago when the Wii was first playable, and it was awesome.

Since E3 has always been more of a press event I now tend to go to PAX since it is local here in Seattle. While I may not attend anymore, I still have a tradition of live tweeting the big 3 (Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo) press conference with one of my best friends in the world Michael Rivette. This year is no different and it was a very interesting year as a few press conferences started on the weekend, which was strange, but we locked in and started live tweeting. I have never blogged really about my feelings and findings of E3, but I am on a plane to Oslo currently (for NDC Oslo, not to stalk Magnus (listen to my podcast, Coffeehouse Blunder, for more on that)) and thought why not.

Microsoft aka XBoneX

Be aware that while I do work at Microsoft all my thoughts and writings are my own and I had no idea what we were announcing this year (or any year as I don’t work in this division). Before I get into the details of what was announced I must say this was the weirdest stage I have ever seen. There were cubes, neon lights, boxes people stood on, I was puzzled the entire time on this. Anyways, back to the good stuff.

Microsoft had teased the Scorpio, the next generation of the Xbox One, for some time now. It was going to be the most powerful system ever created and super optimized for 4K games and movies. Finally, the ~12 Teraflop machine was fully revealed at the very start and that was great to see. This machine is a beast and the smallest most compact ever Xbox ever created. This is great because I own the Xbox One S, and I love the slim size of it in my entertainment credenza.

The Scorpio is actually the processor, and the name of the system is the Xbox One X… which is a very strange name to pick seeing as there is a Xbox One and an Xbox One S already… what is next after this, the Xbox One XS? This is so confusing if you are a parent walking into the store this fall. Did they not learn from Nintendo and the WiiU or even the 2DS? Name aside it is a nice package and is releasing this fall for $500 (which is pricey in the terms of consoles seeing the S is $250, the PS4 Pro is $400 and the Switch is $300). I think the price is justifiable, but for me I don’t have a 4K TV just yet and probably will wait. If you do though then a bunch of games will be auto enhanced and some super enhanced for new launches. The best part though is that all games work everywhere, which will be very nice.

Talking about backwards compatibility, the Xbox One is the only console truly to offer this and they went one step further to now support the Xbox Original?!?! This is crazy and amazing, and I will probably not use it at all, but still nice. I am not sure if anyone will really use backwards compat seeing as current research says it accounts for 1.5% of total usage on the Xbox One, but it is a huge selling point and win.

After the new console, it was on to the games and of course it was all about Forza and for some reason they spent like 10 minutes on being way too excited that they are announcing a car on stage at a video game event. This was the worst for me and others I talked to as no one really cared but maybe if you were a car fan you did so who knows… again puzzled.

The rest of things were a mix of trailers back to back and a little bit of narration here and there. There were some nice surprises thrown in such as the unification of Minecraft which is a huge win now that you can run realms from your console. Everything else was focused on exclusives for the system including: The Last Night, Battlegrounds, State of Decay 2, and others including a nice Indie montage.

Overall I was impressed and give Microsoft a solid B+ score here. I will bump it up maybe even to an A- as the next day they announced a remastered Age of Empires at the Intel event which was amazing!

Sony… Wait what just happened, it is over?

This had to be the strangest live stream and press conference event I have ever witnessed. Sony technically called it a game experience, but it was soooooo strange. Of the 75ish minutes in a beautiful theater packed full of people we only saw 1 person for just 5 minutes’ total. The rest of it was just a super crazy long trailer reel that hopped between PS4 games and PSVR games (there were a lot including Final Fantasy Fishing).

They had some absolute great games to announce including a new God of War (stole the show), Uncharted, Shadows of the Colossus, and Monster Hunter to name a few. This was basically it though as Sony really focused on quantity of games overall and I’m not sure if it worked as to me the overall montage of games was a bit forgettable. At the very end there was a one more thing moment as Sony revealed a brand new Spider-man video game, which looked really great to be honest with you. Then it ended… no hardware news, no handheld news, not a single Vita game, no thanks, just over. It even surprised the audience as people were puzzled and not sure if they were supposed to leave or what. The Twitch announcer wasn’t even ready to go back on the air and stood around trying to scramble to say something.

All in all there were some cool games, but it felt all very unnecessary. I want to hear the vision of the products and where things are heading over the next year. This is a huge opportunity, and I think Sony stumbled here. They did appease with some good games, but to me this wasn’t really a press conference at all, it was more of a Nintendo Direct style that they could have just streamed to set expectations. Overall I must give Sony a C+.

Nintendo: Switch Overload

If you know me then you know that I am a Nintendo fanboy. I just am and can’t help myself (a Switch is packed and ready for me to play on this plane as soon as I finish writing this up), but last year and the year before I was a little let down by Nintendo’s E3 showcase (Michael nailed why… they didn’t have much to show). Nintendo does things different than everyone else as they focus on a pre-recorded Nintendo Direct that lasts around 30 minutes and then is followed by Treehouse live stream showcasing gameplay of all the games. I really like this format, and this year was no different as Nintendo COMPLETELY CRUSHED IT!

There was a great sizzle reel to start off the Direct and it was clear that this was going to be Switch focused, and in fact it was solely Switch. Reggie came out and gave some vision to start and finish and other game developers and designers gave some solid flow throughout which I appreciate (something Sony did not do) and the 30 minutes were packed full of game announcements, game updates, and the most amazing 30 seconds of a logo that stole the whole show. Let’s start at the beginning which focused more on adventure and RPGs with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and its epic scale. I am not a huge Xeno fan, but glad Nintendo has it. Then it was a rush of big Nintendo properties being announced including a new Yoshi and Kirby game, which was cool.

It was great to see some updates on the Zelda DLC that I am really excited about now and is making me rush to finish the game. There was some third-party love with Rocket League being announced and showcased with cross-play support, which was cool. Then there was the stand out moment where super iconic music played and a number 4 stood there and slowly Metroid Prime 4 was revealed. THAT WAS CRAZY and AMAZING. I think just because no one thought Nintendo was going to do it as we haven’t seen a Metroid in so long.

If that wasn’t enough they even announced that a real Pokémon game is coming to the Switch. While many titles are off in the future, there was some real focus on this year including Mario+Rabbids in August(which I pre-ordered immediately), a new Fire Emblem Warriors, and Mario Odyssey (which had an awesome trailer at the end) at the end of the year, and so much more. I was really blown away by the goodness announced here.

While the main keynote ended, there was still questions about 3DS and what is next for it, the eShop on the Switch, and just what is going on with voice chat? I usually don’t stick around for the Treehouse live stream, but I said why not seeing they were going to show off Mario. I watched the stream in the background and was so happy I did because there was even more HUGE news for Nintendo fans including Reggie announcing a brand-new Metroid game for the 3DS followed by 30 minutes of gameplay with the developers! IT WAS BANANAS! It wasn’t over though as we got deep dives on Rabbids, Arms, and one more 3DS reveal with a remake of one of my favorite’s Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga.

What can I say I left the “day” of Nintendo really impressed and wanting to tune in more as E3 continued. Nintendo seems to have learned a lot over the last year and really had tons to show off in a nice compact way. Blown away overall with Nintendo this year and they deserve a solid A!

So Much More

This is just the big three that I covered in this blog, but there was some other great press conferences such as Ubisoft, and a few not so good ones such as Bethesda. This year’s E3 really has me jazzed up and excited for the year of video games ahead.

Motz's Thoughts: Essential Accessories for Nintendo Switch https://staging.montemagno.com/essential-accessories-for-nintendo-switch/ 598df8f2c121b60019bf2fda Sun, 15 Jan 2017 17:08:18 GMT I can’t help it, I am super excited for the Nintendo Switch. I have high hopes for the system even though there are minimal games at launch. Before I jump into the standard games and controller list there are a few things to think about. My recommendations may not be the cheapest option, but are based on trusted brands and positive ratings.

If you haven’t caught up on my thoughts read through my earlier blog on my Nintendo Switch thoughts. Additionally, checkout our Merge Conflict episode:

Storage

Built into the Switch there is only 32GB storage capacity and a bunch of people are complaining about it, but whatever I say. It is NAN flash so the OS “should” be nice and fast compared to other system that just uses a standard hard drive for their OS. Additionally, you can expand the Switch with Micro SDXC which currently ship up to 256GB (currently real expensive), which is crazy. Now those are super expensive so I am picking up a 128GB to start with. Before I ran off to Amazon to pick up the cheapest model I did some research on speeds. Heading to the SD Association you will find this nice guide to the speed class. So you would think what we are looking for is a SDXC with UHS 3 as it has a minimum of 30 MB/s and wouldn’t want anything under that. However, after much research this is actually talking about the write speed and often the read speed (which is what will be happening most of the time) is much much greater and often the write is as well.

If I was going to focus on a UHS 3 there are a few good options:

This means you will get the fastest speeds hands down… assuming the Switch will support speeds that high. Now, that is not to say that a UHS 1 or class 10 couldn’t be as good as UHS 3, but they are rated to have a “minimum” of 10 MB/s. If we compare a few of them we are at:

So in general you aim to save $25-40 to cut your write speed way down. My pick is the Samsumg Pro Select $75: Write 90MB/s - Read 95MB/s as it features the best storage and best writes.

Travel Case

At this point in time thre are only a few travel cases out there that look alright. I am really hoping that Water Field makes a Switch case as they are the best premium case I have run across. Until we find that out it looks like PDP has the Switch case on lock with some really nice designs for $15:

They also seem to be making a full backpack if wanted for $50, but that seems like overkill:

Charging

Those Joy-Con controllers aren’t going to charge themselves! My favorite by far has to be the “maybe” Gamestop exclusive charging dock as it seems to make the most sense.:

Perhaps you don’t want yet another thing to plug into the wall so you could simply grab additional Joy-Con charging grips that are not only awesome grips, but charge your Joy-Cons too.

Joy-Con

While there are tons of other accessories out there it is clear to me that everyone will need to atleast pick up another Joy-Con controller. This will get you up to two players or 4 if the game supports split controllers. Additionally, you can get them in a bunch of colors:

Now, if you are buying the colored ones, you will probably want matching Joy-Con straps, which will up charge you another $8 each! You can buy them in Blue and Red.

At this point there are more things I could list, but this is all I pre-ordered on Amazon to show up day one of my Switch playing. While this may seem like the ultimate affiliate link post (and yes I will make a tiny commission if you use my Amazon links), but I had a hard time researching SD cards and actually just tracking these things down on the amazon page, so hopefully this helps you out a bit.

Motz's Thoughts: Nintendo Switch https://staging.montemagno.com/motzs-thoughts-nintendo-switch/ 598df8f2c121b60019bf2fe6 Mon, 24 Oct 2016 16:00:37 GMT Last week something extremely interesting happened, when Nintendo was able to keep the announcement for their new console completely secret. They launched a short 3 minute 36 second trailer for their new console, the Nintendo Switch, and no one had any idea. No one knew the shape of the console, but the concept, joysticks, price, specs, games, name, or just about anything else besides the single rumor that it may be a “hybrid” that could bridge portable and home console.

To me and to other this was not only a huge surprise, but also completely refreshing as I can not remember the last Apple or Google event that I didn’t know nearly exactly what they were announcing.  If you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, do yourself a favor and check out the YouTube video here:

This blog is usually filled with code, but this is my first entry in “Motz’s Thoughts”, where I write about technology or other things happening in the industry and how it may have an impact on mobile as we know it.

The Nintendo Switch!

Let’s get it out of the way first, I love Nintendo! Everything that they have come out with since the original Nintendo NES I have scooped up and purchased nearly as soon as it came out (except for maybe the VirtualBoy). I love my Nintendo 3DS and have it by my side each night before bed and often when I am traveling to collect street passes. I don’t often “game” anymore and kind of fell out of love with games after being on a team developing a game for the Xbox 360′s XBLA. I do however still buy a lot of games and enjoy them when I do have time. When I got up at 7:00AM on Thursday, October 20th I didn’t know what to expect, but I was excited for whatever it had in store. Then I laid my eyes upon it and I was excited and a bit concerned all at the same time when I saw a 7 inch screen, dock, and multiple controllers.

It’s Still a Home Console

One of the key features of the Nintendo Switch is that you can change it from being a home console docked and outputting video and audio to your television, or take it on the go with you anywhere you go. While the latter is pretty awesome and I will get into it in a bit, let’s not forget that it is a home console and that is where the trailer started.

In a world of crowded entertainment spaced the tiny design of the Switch has me really excited. It will surely be front and center next to my television no matter what. My Wii U is huge and has external hard drives setup to it with a huge controller that needs its own power cord and when we moved I had to leave it all boxed up because I simply didn’t have any room (while I did have the old Xbox One, and now the Xbox One S… so maybe there is room…). The Switch is a perfect compliment to anyones home system from what I am seeing, although it does need some room if you want to make it portable.

Truly Portability

The Wii U was portable… if you were on the couch or your bedroom was directly next to your television, but the Switch feel like the Wii U done right. Simply apply the “Joy-Con”(terrible name) controllers and boom you have a 7-inch screen with full control to play the games that you love. Plug in some headphones and you no longer will disturbed anyone in the house. I have found the Xbox One’s headphones to work extremely well when you have other people sleeping in the house, but sometimes you don’t want to be tied to the television (or maybe someone else is using the television). Switch seems to have it covered in this area and of course it completely works without the Switch Dock no matter where you happen to be. The video shows bringing it on a plane, friends house, etc, just pick it up and go.

You could say that the Nintendo 3DS is Nintendo’s portable system and some are saying that the Nintendo 3DS is now replaced with the Switch, but I don’t think that is the case just yet.  I will most likely find myself taking my 3DS with me everywhere I go, and it will be a nice option to take the Switch with me, but then I think of the multi-gamer household. I don’t expect families to be purchasing 4 Switch consoles for 2 adults and 2 children, that seems expensive! It is more likely that the Nintendo 3DS will have a successor or stick around for a long time with its amazing game collection.

There are also a lot of unique features the 3DS has such as DS download play, retro titles, Street Pass, and a feeling that this is “mine” not the families.

Controllers

The largest concern for me is controllers. I have a crap ton of GameCube, Wii, and Wii U specific controllers that all seem to magically still work together. Finally, it looks like there will be a clean start! Time to get rid of all those controllers that are sitting there collecting dust and I can replace them with the… 3 different controllers? Maybe 4? Well it isn’t as bad as others and even myself are making it out to be. If you think about the “Joy-Con” (again horrible name) controllers that can be attached to the console, attached to a remote dock, or played apart then that is really just one controller… not bad. Then you have the pro-controller, which of course isn’t a terrible idea because it has the same layout of buttons and controls that the “Joy-Con”’s have in all of the configurations.

The problem really comes down the the weird multiplayer configuration of the split “Joy-Cons”.

This scares me a tiny bit as developers will have to opt in to support this mode and let’s be honest the controller looks tiny. I love the idea, but just not the final implementation.

Misc Thoughts

I will say that I love the idea of no more discs and going back to cartridges. They have worked so well on my 3DS system and it feels very natural now that this type of media has become so cheap. I am also hoping that you can expand the storage on the device without having to plug in a huge external hard drive. Let me buy a huge SD card and go to town. I have more thoughts, but what really struck me was when I read a Forbes article on 5 Questions that may Sink the Switch, which I found completely ridiculous and the wrong 5 questions. I already stated a few of my questions and concerns above, but I wanted to chime in really quick on their Questions and give you my answers.

The “Forbes Questions”

1.) What is the Battery Life?

-> Well seeing it is based off the Nvidia Shield we could pretty much assume that it is similar to it. It only needs to reach about 4-5 hours without the dock seeing it isn’t ONLY a portable. That gets me across the entire US and if it is International then I will probably plug it in. Which gets to the important question, will it accept standard power adapters? Nintendo has always had their own charger, which meant I had to pack and worry about another charger, but if the Switch uses USB Micro then I think Battery Life isn’t a concern.

2.) How Much Does It Cost?

I personally believe that Nintendo has learned from their WiiU mistakes. My estimate is $300-350, which is a bargain compared to a $700-800 iPhone or Pixel device.  I am more interested in what types of connectivity will it have? Will it be Wi-Fi only? Will it have a cellular connection, and if so will that cost additional money? My assumption is Wi-Fi only just like the 3DS by the way :)

3.) How Extensive is Third Party Support, Really?

This is kind of a lack luster question to be asking this early seeing absolutely no price, games, or anything besides that it uses an Nvidia chip. The cool part there is that the collection of games on the WiiU is amazing that all could have HD remakes. This would be a huge start to the system seeing not that many people played them and could bring new life to those games. Additionally, there is word of Unreal 4 being officially supported, which is HUGE.

4.) Is It Comfortable?

Yes it will be.

5.) How Useful is The Mobility Gimmick, Really?

Look around at anyone on a bus, flight, or walking around playing Pokemon Go. People love portability and we are always on the move. Being able to start a game at home, take it with you anywhere in the house or outside of the house is a huge huge win for a lot of people that could be the core audience for this system. There is a whole group of gamers that carry around their consoles and allow them to take up half of their carry on bag, well no more with the Switch!

The State of Mobile Gaming

This all brings me to my final section which has weighed on me heavy so far, which is if or how the Switch will impact mobile gaming. Gaming on the go isn’t new and mobile phones and tablets have take casual gaming by storm. However, while I enjoy the casual brick breaking and jumping games whenever there is a game that has “virtual” joysticks I am immediately turned away. They just do not work… at all. There have been many companies that have attempted to bring attachments to the market to turn devices into a “gaming” machine, but our phones do have short battery lives, and we do actually want to use them as phones at some point to do other things. It is super annoying to get constant interruptions when playing a game and then having to switch to send an email or a text message.

I got into developing games about two years back when we shipped CocosSharp2D and made a few small games. They were swipe touchscreen based and could be accomplished in under a few minutes. They were fun, but I really wanted to go back to the days of when I was developing for the Xbox 360, and I thought that the Apple TV and Android TV devices may have been it. Then something interesting happened. Apple didn’t release a real game controller, and every Android TV had it as an optional purchase had different controllers. You never knew what you were going to get into. As a developer I want to ensure that when I am developing something that all of my users have the full game potential. This is why mobile games work so well, they all have touch screens, so you have 100% coverage when you release a game. I asked Frank this week if we could discuss this and more on our weekly podcast Merge Conflict and I hope that you take a listen and chime in on the episode. What do you think of the Switch, mobile gaming, accessories, or just anything else on your mind.
